August is American Artists Appreciation Month! We have so many great artists living and/or working in our buildings. We are lucky to be able to highlight just a few of them throughout the month.

Lyman & Brown Leather Goods is owned and operated by Linda L. Brown and S. Glenn Brown.

Linda holds an MFA in Directing from the University of Utah.  She has worked as a director, animator, performer, puppeteer, designer and teacher.

Linda first started designing at the young age of 11, when her parents bought her an antique “White” treadle sewing machine for her birthday. She was hooked!  Over the years she continued to explore design and fabrication.  She studied fashion design at Montana State University, and later costume design at the University of Utah.  She has worked professionally as a designer for the theatre in both costuming and puppetry.

Glenn, a professional artist and designer who wears many hats; he has a BA in Art from Westminster College, and an MFA in Theatre Design from the University of Utah.  His other talents include sculpture, mask work, puppetry, playwriting, animation, drawing, painting, set design, and Asian theatre.

It’s often been our habit to make holiday gifts for our family.  One recent Christmas we decided to create passport holders made from Glenn’s old leather bomber jacket.  We loved hand-stitching the worn supple leather and we haven’t turned back since.  Our current line of leather goods has evolved out of a search to create fine-crafted leather goods sewn by hand using the finest full-grain oil-tanned leather.  Our leather is sourced from US tanneries and distributors.

“We call it slow fashion.”  Each item is designed, cut, and sewn by hand.  This process does take time, but in the end, you are left with a product that will naturally condition and develop a delicious patina for years to come.
